This site is a tribute to Pat Mungall Fothergill. She is much loved and will always be remembered.
Pat Fothergill, beloved wife of Derek and mother of Steve, Phil, Caroline and Sarah; Grandma (Granny Pat) to Ben, Jake, Cara and Mikey and father in law to Anne and Charles. Pat was born at ‘Old Croft’ Stanwix, Carlisle to Elizabeth and Tom Stephenson on 6th November 1931. Pat qualified as a radiographer in her twenties at Middlesex Hospital and went on to work in Carlisle Infirmary in a senior position for the treatment of cancer patients. Later in life, and after having a family, Pat worked as a dental technician and receptionist at a Rowlands Gill practice under Mr Ward and with Mr Doug Young until she retired.
Pat and Derek Fothergill met in their twenties in the Lake District through Keswick Rock Climbing Club. They loved hill walking throughout their life together and were devoted to each other and their family. Pat lived with Derek first in Jesmond and then in Rowlands Gill where they stayed for over 50 years. Most of this time was in the family home of Sowlers Wood, Dene Road which the family owned until 2018. Pat and Derek also lived in Morganton, North Carolina from 1992 to 2000 when Derek's work as a Corporate Director at SGL (formerly Anglo Great Lakes) took them to the USA. Whilst hesitant about the move at first, Pat loved her time in North Carolina and made many friends there. The family had many holidays together in Morganton and enjoyed walking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and visiting Lake James.
Pat was a great mum, always loving, always full of fun and always mischievous. She never lost the twinkle in her eye and her wonderful sense of humour. Pat loved life, loved family, loved get togethers, loved sunsets, loved dogs and was always the life and soul of any party.
Pat passed away peacefully in her sleep at Briarwood NHS Care Home, Whitmore Road, Blaydon-upon-Tyne on 2nd March 2019 aged 87; 6 and a half years after the loss of her beloved husband Derek. Pat had been suffering from Alzheimer's for a number of years but thankfully did not lose her memory of her closest family and friends and her longer term memory mostly remained good. She had a brief stay in the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Newcastle suffering from flu and a chest infection before contracting pneumonia. Pat recovered sufficiently to return to Briarwood and spent several lovely days with family before her health deteriorated suddenly. Son Phil was with her when she passed away peacefully.
The family would like to thank the staff at Briarwood for the wonderful care Mum received over her years there, and the clear affection they held for her, as well as the great support we as a family have received from them before and after mum’s death.
Pat would be pleased to know that with her passing, your contributions in support of research to better understand and treat Alzheimer's will help others in the future. Thank you so much.
In memory of a lovely lady, our Aunty Pat
Fondly remembered
In loving memory of a devoted mum and Granny Pat. Along with Dad, she gave us the happiest of childhoods, taught us to love life, and was always there for us. So dearly missed. We'll remember you always with great love and affection.
